Beneath the Battery: Examining the Ecological Fallout of Lithium Mining

The use of electric vehicles and the lithium-ion batteries in them has been recently promoted as a way to overcome climate change, but research done shows that they may actually create unsustainable environmental issues. Lithium is a kind of element used to create renewable energy and electric vehicles, making it useful in the world’s transition away from fossil fuel usage. But, more lithium mining is starting to harm ecosystems, water reservoirs, and biodiversity in habitats. The issue of electric vehicles using lithium-ion batteries is similar to the problem in Silent Spring, where the technological innovation of pesticides was seen as beneficial at first but then started having negative effects on the environment later on.


Carson states that pesticides were at first seen as useful because they improved agriculture and controlled pests, but as use continued they eventually had negative impacts and caused ecological damage. For example, Carson says that although pesticides were initially celebrated they became chemicals that can move through the environment through different ways like in a “chain of poisoning and death” (Carson 9). Similarly, lithium mining is being questioned for its usage, although it plays a big role in reducing carbon emissions. In the article, lithium mining has adverse impacts on the environment and can “pollute groundwater, emit carbon dioxide, create toxic waste and destroy habitats” (Bernhard par. 10). Also, certain methods of lithium extraction from the environment use billions of gallons of water and involve chemical release of sulfuric acid, which can introduce harmful toxins into ecosystems (Bernhard par. 22). These risks show that what was once assumed a perfect solution to climate change, has unexpected consequences that negatively impact the environment.
